How To Make Money Despite Your Fear Of Success
It is well documented that many people fail to learn how to make money due to the phenomenon known as "fear of failure". What is less documented however, is the fact that there is also a phenomenon known as the "fear of success" which also handicaps individuals.
The fear of failure will often lead many people to accept their current undesirable situation. This comes as a result of an inability to make a decision, or take action for fear of rejection or a negative outcome. It is quite simple to identify this mental state, and there are a myriad of tools in the self-help industry to combat this inertial state of mind, and reprogram the mind for success. However, the fear of success is a little more tricky. It is more subtle, therefore more difficult to spot, and harder to extirpate.
Does this sound like you? Do you fear success? If you are uncertain, here are some key indications of a fear of success state of mind.
1) You study and put in the effort to implement self-improvement techniques, but your quality of life does not improve, and may even depreciate.
2) You settle for less, although you know you are capable of much more.
3) You begin new project will high enthusiasm and optimism, but stop short before completion.
4) Your expectation is failure, even if things look great at the moment.
Do any of the above statements match your pattern of behavior? If so, you may have a fear of success which is keeping you from making the money that you deserve.
The fear of success can also make you behave in ways which hold you back. I will now list some of the symptoms of a fear of success.
1) Procrastination. We are all guilty of this from time to time. We put things off which need to be done or fail to do what we know will bring you closer to your desired result. However, when it becomes a trend which our money making activities, it then become a major problem.
Procrastination kills success! How can you expect to achieve your goals if you do not even take steps towards them? Strive to do little things each day which will bring you closer to your ultimate goal bit by bit. This is why having a personal development plan is an essential ingredient in the fight against procrastination. Take action! Positive action! Any action! Even if it is the wrong action, you can refine your steps as you go along. Just do not sit and do nothing. Taking action is one of the key aspects in personal development.
2) Missing the forest for the trees. While this is nearly the opposite of procrastination, it has the same effect on your personal development. The aforementioned saying is well known, but have you ever sat down and defined it's meaning?
It means that you should not ever get caught up in your plan, believing that it is more important than the ultimate goal. If you do this, you will not be able to refine your steps when need be. Remember, your course of action is only being taken so that you can reach the ultimate goal. If your course of action is no longer the best course of action, it needs to be reevaluated, and changed.
3) Thinking that the timing is bad. Have you ever waited until this happened, and that happed before moving forward with something? Have you ever needed every bit of information on something before taking action?
Remember, ACTION is the key to blowing the door to success wide open. Taking small steps forward are better than taking none or waiting to see if your foot is landing on the right spot. Even if your actions take you away from your goal, you have at least gained insight and knowledge about what does not work, and can take action to correct it. For instance, Thomas Edison did not invent a light bulb which worked until the 10,000th try. When asked whether it was frustrating to fail 9,999, Edison responded, "I did not fail 9,999. I just found 9,999 ways which did not work."
4) Being a perfectionist. This is very similar to the point above, and has the same effect. Essentially, you never really move forward. It does not matter how good a job is when its finished, it can always be improved upon. Even if it is perfect in your mind.
5) Seeing only problems. Where is your focus located? Do you constantly see problems only? If this is you, it is unlikely that you will change overnight. However, you can use this mindset to your advantage while you strive in your personal development to acquire an opportunistic frame of mind instead. In other words, you can identify the problems in your mindset.
Enjoy the journey, follow the above guidelines and you will determine how to make money. Eventually, your fear of success will dissipate, and you will have moved a long way forward in your personal development.
