Essentially, the spiders "crawl" (ie. scan) the pages of websites, in order to index the pages which exist on the internet. These spiders gather information from websites, and use this information as a basis for calculated what Google has coined "Page Rank".

While name the term "Page Rank" is a trademark of Google, the patent is actually assigned to Stanford University. With that short bit of history, let us continue. What is Page Rank? Page Rank is an indication of how important Google perceives your website as being. It operates on a scale of one to ten, with ten being the highest Page Rank given by Google. The Page Rank which your website receives is a direct result of how many other websites link to your website. However, Google gives greater weight to links which come from more reputable websites, with higher Page Rank. Pages developed for the sole purpose of link building (ie. link farms), can easily be detected and disregarded by Google. Furthermore, the Google Page Rank algorithm takes into account the internal link structure of your website. This is where a sitemap can come in handy.

A sitemap is an outline of the pages on your website. It is a page where your visitors can see the overall structure of your website by viewing all of your internal links on one page. Remember we mentioned that the Google Page Rank algorithm takes both external and internal links into account. A sitemap allows Google to find and index pages or links on your website that it may not have found otherwise. Your sitemap actually facilitates the travel of the web spiders from one page to the next. The more pages contained in your website, the better your chances of obtaining a higher Page Rank.

Nonetheless, keep this in mind. Your pages must not contain duplicate content. In other words, do not just copy content from one page, and put it on another. If you try this, your Page Rank will probably decrease.

The methods to increasing your Page Rank are not very complicated. Include unique, regularly updated content as frequently as possible, on as many pages as possible. Link your pages together. Create a sitemap to make navigation easier. Provide links to the sitemap for each page.

Zero Cost. Zero Obligation.
